1 Let us Sing - Poem (Page 1-2)
"Looking, looking, looking
Looking for my furry cat!
Are you sitting on the window shed?
Are you sleeping under my bed?
Where are you my furry cat?..."
Teaching Note: Read aloud the poem and ask children to recite and enact it. Encourage them to discuss the things which are above, below, on, under, etc. Ask them about animals they see around them like cats, dogs, cows, etc.
✅ Solution / Activity Idea:
Make children stand in a circle. Say "Where is the cat?" Children reply "Under the table!" while pointing. Repeat with different positions: on the chair, behind the door, inside the bag, outside the classroom. This reinforces all positional words through play.
2 Look at the Pictures and Circle the Correct Word (Page 3)
A. Where do you put your shoes?
Answer: Outside the room.
Explanation: We usually keep our shoes outside the room or on a shoe rack to keep the room clean.
B. Where do you throw the garbage?
Answer: Inside the dustbin.
Explanation: We always throw garbage inside the dustbin to keep our surroundings clean.
3 Think and Answer (Page 3)
A. The red ball is ______ the bed.
Answer: Under
Explanation: The red ball is positioned below the bed, so we say it is "under" the bed.
B. The cat is ______ the car.
Answer: On
Explanation: The cat is sitting on top of the car, so we say it is "on" the car.
C. The man is lying ______ the tree.
Answer: Under
Explanation: The man is resting below the tree in its shade, so he is "under" the tree.
D. The cow is ______ the house.
Answer: Outside
Explanation: The cow is not inside the house; it is standing outside the house.
4 Let us Do - Tick (✓) the Things (Page 4-5)
A. Tick (✓) the things which are inside.
Answer: Tick the fish in the aquarium, books in the shelf, clothes in the cupboard — anything that is inside a container or enclosed space.
Explanation: "Inside" means within an enclosed area. The fish is inside the water tank, books are inside the shelf.
B. Tick (✓) the things which are outside.
Answer: Tick the tree, car on the road, birds flying, sun — anything in the open air.
Explanation: "Outside" means in the open, not enclosed. Trees, birds, and clouds are outside.
5 Look at the Picture - More Practice (Page 5)
C. Look at the picture and tick (✓) the correct words.
i. A boy is sitting ______ the tree.
Answer: Under
The boy is sitting below the tree for shade.
ii. Birds are ______ the tree.
Answer: On
The birds are sitting on the branches of the tree.
D. Draw a smile below the nose and eyebrows above the eyes.
Answer: Draw a smile (curved line) below the nose and eyebrows (two small lines) above the eyes.
Explanation: "Below" means lower position (smile under nose), "Above" means higher position (eyebrows over eyes).
6 Our National Flag - Tiranga (Page 6)
🧡🤍💚 Teaching Note: Discuss when, where and why we hoist the National Flag. Let children express their feelings about National celebrations. Ask children to make their own tiranga and sing the National Anthem.
i. Which colour is at the top of the tiranga?
Answer: Saffron
The topmost stripe of our National Flag is saffron (kesariya) colour.
ii. Which colour is below the white colour on the tiranga?
Answer: Green
The green stripe is below (under) the white stripe on the flag.
iii. Which colour is above the green colour on the tiranga?
Answer: White
The white stripe is above the green stripe.
iv. Where is the Ashoka Chakra on the tiranga?
Answer: In the middle
The Ashoka Chakra (24-spoke wheel) is placed in the center of the white stripe.
7 Chhuk Chhuk Train - Before & After (Page 7-8)
"Chhuk chhuk! Chhuk chhuk! Goes our train. Over the hills and down to the plains..."
A. How many bogies are there after the engine?
Answer: Count all the bogies (compartments) that come after the engine. After means the bogies behind/following the engine.
B. How many bogies are there before the red bogie?
Answer: Count the bogies that come before the red bogie. Before means ahead of/in front of the red bogie.
C & D. Colour the bogies.
Answer: Fill orange colour in bogies after the red bogie and blue colour in bogies before the red bogie.
🎮 Classroom Activity:
Children form a train by holding each other's shoulders. Each child tells who is before and after them in the train. This makes learning positional words fun and memorable!
8 Sorting & Grouping Objects (Page 8-9)
Suwali says: "I have put all the leaves in one group and chalk pieces in another group."
Explanation: Suwali is sorting objects — putting similar things together. Leaves together, chalk pieces together. This is called grouping or classification.
Rohit says: "I have put all the pebbles together."
Explanation: Rohit also grouped similar objects — all pebbles in one group.
Why did Suwali make such groups with buttons?
Answer: Suwali sorted buttons into groups based on their colour, size, or shape. For example, all red buttons together, all big buttons together, or all round buttons together.
Help Suwali to sort these buttons in other ways.
Answer: Buttons can be sorted by:
- Colour: Red buttons, Blue buttons, Green buttons
- Size: Big buttons, Small buttons
- Shape: Round buttons, Square buttons
- Number of holes: 2-hole buttons, 4-hole buttons
🎮 Classroom Activity:
Give children mixed objects (seeds, beads, leaves, buttons). Ask them to sort into groups. Use positional words: "Put two objects in the bottom rack, one object in the top rack."
